Dublin bookshop

This photograph shows a building on Parnell Street, Dublin, with a history going back to the eighteenth century. During the 1916 Rising, it was a draper's shop, quietly witnessing one of the key moments in Irish history. Over the years, it has seen many personal stories and changed along with the city and the people who visited it.

In recent years, the building became a second-hand bookshop. Soon after I took this photograph, the bookshop closed and the building was sold. When I walk by now, I see it slowly falling apart like many old buildings I have photographed around the city. As small businesses keep disappearing from Dublin's streets, buildings like this lose not just their business role but also the character and shared memories they have built over many years. The photograph serves as both a record and a way to preserve, showing a familiar Dublin street scene just before its story changed again.
