The Market

I’ve been taking photographs in the market area of Dublin 7 for over a decade. I had been documenting the slow deterioration inside Dublin's Wholesale Fruit & Vegetable Market as it prepared to close its doors and the traders dispersed. It is now closed since 2019 to make way for significant refurbishment. It presently lies idol apart from being a storage space for a construction company as new hotels besiege the area. Now that I can’t gain entry inside, I continue photographing the building outside to keep up my connection to the place. These black and white analogue photographs have been placed directly onto bushed gold and silver aluminium.

Please be aware if purchasing that it can take up to two weeks to order these prints.

Hollywood Kodachrome

My drawings were inspired by photographs of old Hollywood movie stars taken with Kodachrome film. Lighting had to be three times as bright to register on Kodachrome film, which was also problematic for makeup which could melt down the model's face. Makeup had to be applied heavily and flat. Skin imperfections had to be dealt with before the shoot as it wasn't possible to touch up the images afterwards. The results were fabulous. Mear mortality is hidden, and these women became goddesses.

Merging beauty with the beast

My fondness for industrial spaces overlaid by beautiful women from another era. These silent movie stars hover over the castle like cement factory creating fictitious stories.

Prints

I'm getting back to my first love, printmaking. I am hoping my selection will increase quickly as I have lots of ideas but time to create is always a challenge. Anyway here are a couple of prints. A silkscreen and a risograph to start.

Tea, cakes and headscarves

These drawings were influenced by a selection of old photographic slides which I acquired. These images depict a group of elderly people on holidays or out on day trips. Having regular pitstops by the sea where endless cups of tea and sandwiches appear out of nowhere. The original photographs are from around the mid-1960s as suggested by their clothing. Family photographs are very important to me and I find it hard to imagine how they could end up discarded. These people are strangers, but I try to connect to them through drawing. I like to think I a living them a new lease of life.

Office reflections

Photographic prints of office life reflected through its windows.

I work part-time in an office where some of the windows have mirrored glass. In particular light, the windows reflect back the internal office space and the street outside, sometimes with equal measure. The effect changes depending on the weather and the time of day.

These photographs illuminate our propensity to daydream as we look through windows on the world outside.

Limerick in black and white

Analog black and white photographs from my rambles around Limerick City in the early 1990s as seen in Winter Papers 3.

Please note it will take about two weeks to receive your print after purchase as I order prints on request. I can not afford to print them unless they are purchased in advance. I hope you understand.

The Landmark

Photographs of Nenagh Shopping Centre also known as The Landmark before it got knocked to the ground. Every time I was in Nenagh town over a period of a few years I was was drawn to this crumbling shopping centre. I knew it's time was short and now I hear it has been flattened to the ground.

People

Making connections with people I know and people I meet randomly through photography.
